Cardiac Imaging Research Group

The principal research focus of the Cardia Imaging Research group is the use of cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) imaging as a mechanistic, diagnostic and prognostic tool to investigate pathophysiology, diagnosis and outcome of heart disease.

Flinders/SAHMRI's Cardiac Imaging Research (CIR) was established in late 2008 by Professor Joseph Selvanayagam with 3 key roles:

  • Conducting investigator-initiated, grant-funded clinical research and imaging clinical trials. CIR has extensive experience in conducting phase 2 to phase 4 trials.
  • An academic research organisation (ARO) providing CMR core lab services for multi-centre national and international clinical trials sponsored by the pharmaceutical, biotechnology and medical device industries. The group provides analysis of CMR sub-studies of international cardiology clinical trials in myocardial infarction and heart failure. It is designed to be the leading CMR Core Lab in Australasia.
  • Teaching and supervision of PhD fellows, post-doctoral research fellows and imaging clinical fellows. Closely affiliated with this is an internationally-recognised CMR training facility, conducting SCMR accredited Level I, II, & III CMR training courses in Australia and South East Asia since 2009.

The group’s research program focuses on coronary artery disease, heart failure and non-ischemic cardiomyopathy (NICM). It includes defining novel myocardial ischemia techniques and risk prediction in both the cardiac and non-cardiac (e.g. chronic kidney disease, systemic sclerosis, cancer) patient populations.
